Oil and UV Interactions - Presentation

Citation:

Barron, M. Oil and UV Interactions - Presentation. National Academy of Sciences Subcommittee on Oil in the Sea, Washington, DC, February 11, 2021.

Impact/Purpose:

The purpose of this invited presentation is to summarize the influence of phototoxicity on the toxicity of oil to a National Academy of Sciences subcommittee on oil spills in marine environments. Dr Barron is a subject matter expert on the phototoxicity of oil, which is the increase in adverse effects in the presence of ultraviolet radiation in natural sunlight. The impact of the work is that it will inform NAS and the public on the potential for greater toxicity of oil in environments with high solar radiation. Ultimately the public and stakeholders will have greater information and understanding of the impacts of oil spills.

Description:

This is a power point presentation that summarizes the potential for phototoxicity of crude and refined oils. The presentation will cover the phototoxic components of oil, mechanisms of petroleum phototoxicity, and the environmental and biological modulation of phototoxicity.
